
How to Insulate a Bunkie for Year-Round Use in Canada
A solid timber bunkie is surprisingly comfortable in three seasons — dense interlocking logs have natural insulating mass that keeps interiors cooler in July and takes the edge off cool spring and fall nights. But if you want to use your bunkie through a Canadian winter, targeted insulation plus a heat source is the recipe. Here’s where the heat actually escapes and how to stop it.
Where Bunkies Lose Heat
In a small log structure, the biggest losses are through the roof (warm air rises) and the floor (cold radiates up from the ground). The solid timber walls of a quality kit already perform reasonably well, which is why we recommend insulating in this order:
- Roof
- Floor
- Air sealing (gaps, door and window perimeters)
- Walls (optional, only for true deep-winter use)
Insulate the Roof
The easiest time to insulate the roof is during the build, before the roofing material goes on. The standard approach is rigid foam board (EPS or polyiso) laid over the roof boards, covered by strapping and your roofing material. Two to three inches of rigid foam makes a dramatic difference in a small space.
If the bunkie is already built, insulate from the inside: fit rigid foam or mineral wool between the rafters, add a 6-mil poly vapour barrier on the warm side, and finish with tongue-and-groove pine or panelling so it matches the timber interior.
Target: aim for at least R-12 to R-20 in the roof for comfortable winter use.
Insulate the Floor
Cold floors are the number-one comfort complaint in winterized bunkies. Again, the build stage is the golden opportunity: before laying the floorboards, fit rigid foam snugly between the floor joists, supported on cleats or mesh, leaving no gaps at the edges.
For an existing bunkie with crawl space access, rigid foam can be fitted from below and sealed at the joists. If there’s no access, an interior floating floor — rigid foam over the existing boards, topped with a new subfloor and finish flooring — costs a little ceiling height but works well.
Target: R-10 to R-14 under the floor.
Air Sealing: The Cheap Win
Small structures live and die by drafts. Before adding any insulation, spend an hour with low-expansion foam and quality caulk around window and door frames, at penetrations for wiring, and where the floor frame meets the bottom logs. A tube of caulk often does more for perceived warmth than an inch of insulation.
A note on log walls: timber naturally expands and contracts with the seasons. Quality interlocking systems are designed to stay tight through this movement — avoid rigidly fastening trim or panelling across multiple logs, which can restrict natural settling.
Should You Insulate the Walls?
For most users, no. Dense timber walls plus an insulated roof and floor plus a properly sized heater keeps a compact bunkie comfortable even in an Ontario January. Interior wall insulation adds cost, shrinks your floor area, and hides the timber that makes the space beautiful. Ventilation: Don’t Skip It
A tight, insulated bunkie needs air exchange, especially if people sleep in it. At minimum, install passive vents (one low, one high) or crack a window; for regular winter occupancy, a small HRV or a heat source that doesn’t add moisture is the better path. Condensation on cold windows is your early warning sign.
